I want to do an audit of compliance in filling out forms. There are 100,000 forms in the population, more than I can look at, so I need a random sample.
Here is the requirement. Every time someone fills out an A form, he must also complete a B form with the same information. The A form generates the B form. For every A form, there must also be a corresponding B form.
There are 100,000 A forms, so there must also be 100,000 B forms, and the B forms must match to an A form.
How big must my sample size to do a legitimate audit? How many A forms must I check to see if there’s a corresponding B form to know how well we are doing in form compliance?
Any websites or other sources explaining this would be most appreciated. I just couldn’t find this on the Internet.
Thank you so much.
Before anyone can answer this question you need to answer a few questions yourself.
(1) What error rate in the forms is acceptable? (i.e. would you be happy if 95% of the forms were correct?, or does it have to be 100%)
(2) How confident do you want to be that the results of your testing of the sample accurately reflect the the whole population?
After answering those two questions you should be able to say ….”I am 95% conficent that the error rate of the forms is no greater than 5%)
After you set your parameters go download an old US government program thats free to anyone called Rat-Stats and it will calculate the # of items you need to test.
