Research, research, research. Great concept, unfortunately, multi do not own the time, desire, or ability to learn all sides of an issue before deciding on this own beliefs. There are too most problems to be constantly exploring and keeping current. There is a certain reliance, therefore, on the media, public officials, and our peers to do the research for us. Elaboration Likelihood Model Persuasion
Those opinions the current most closely mirror our own values become our own – liberal or conservative – without the realities or info to back it up. This occurs due to how is called the elaboration probability model. Depending on the personal importance of the issue, either the sizeable or peripheral course to persuasion may be taken. Those matters that are not that important to us personally, we don’t pay that significantly attention to and may be persuaded established on the other issues in that we do identify as important.
What does that mean? An issue that is not all that important, say where you buy a t-shirt may not matter all that much to you. However, a friend might suggest a place that has cute clothes, which means that she has “done your research” for you. Your friend of probably already has cost, colors, location, and a host other information, saving you time. You trust her opinion, and are unlikely to go to another store unless you become disappointed by her choices. Elaboration Likelihood Model Persuasion
How do the ideas, attitudes, and political persuasions promote social change? One is that the laws can change based on these. Each president, each congressperson, each government official has an agenda when they come to public office. The promotion of this agenda causes prior acts and laws to be revisited or new laws to be enacted. This promotes public awareness of the issue as well as a possible difference in the way we live our lives. A good example of this is the change in drinking age laws. Congress put political pressure on states to change the legal drinking age to 21 by withholding highway funds. Hold-out states, like Texas and Louisiana, quickly complied with these new standards. These new standards changed several industries, as well as the drinking public. Elaboration Likelihood Model Persuasion
Those who violate social norms and laws (e.g. pro-life demonstrators who bomb pro-choice clinics) tend to engender more distrust than converts. In the current situation with Al Qaeda and the Taliban, moral and legal indignation against the acts of terrorism have engendered hatred, distrust, anger, and fear rather than understanding or recognition of their cause. Most of the world has risen up against them. In addition, massive, global changes have been and will be made in the way we live our lives and promote our business. Learn to Exceed Your Expectations.
