Does it ever change depending on circumstances? If so, elaborate…
You mean after introduction to the commands/behaviors, repetition/praise, AND proper proofing? In that case, 100%. I’m not quite there with my dog (so i do not put her in situations where i know she may disobey and i cannot correct it) but once we finish training then i would expect her obedience and behavior 100% of the time disregarding the circumstances.
If i tell her to "sit" or "down" then i expect her to sit or go down even if there’s a squirrel running around in front of her. If i tell her to "leave it" then i expect her to leave whatever it is that’s fallen (which happens a lot at my house) even if it smells good.
Add – this goes for spoken commands as well as behavior. If i don’t have my dog in "heel" then she is free to loose leash, but her leash manners are still expected to be followed and she is expected to be quite (not bark at passers by) – something we’ve been doing since day one.
Once my dog KNOWS something, he is expected to follow it 100% of the time. I tell him to come, he had better come, no ifs ands or buts…
I do have different requirements in different situations. We go for a walk down the street, he simply needs to walk on a loose leash. We go out to a store and I tell him to heel, then he must heel.
100% or you can not considered them "trained" I don’t like to repeat commands and they must not run, or even think about it if they are called.
If I have a dog that is not 100% they go back on lead and start again
I was only thinking about this today in connection with my dog’s recall being better on some days than on others. OK, she’s a Greyhound so not the easiest to get reliable recall from but sometimes she’s a little monkey and won’t come back on just the call but needs a visual cue too like a ball being thrown in front of me. She will stop and let me come to her and attach her lead at such times so she knows she’s been summoned. She’s 100% reliable on other things like nice lead walking, staying back from a door, going to bed when told, but the recall would appear to ‘wear out’ and I’d rate it no better than 70%. It can be reinforced with treat training but there are still those annoying odd days. I guess all dogs are different and some breeds ’stick’ better than others.
I gotta agree with the majority here. I expect my dogs to be compliant 100% of the time once trained and proofed. Once the dog has gone through initial training and proofing the circumstances never change what I expect the outcome to be. I expect that behavior all the time and I expect them to mind my commands in every instance the first time. I don’t want to lead others astray who may be just reading this…I cannot stress enough the importance of proofing each and every command. If the dog has not been proofed you cannot say it is trained without fail and therefore all circumstances are merely learning situations. I just don’t think the majority actually proof their commands. Most people think if the dog is sits for a treat it is trained…the very opposite is true. Depending on the dog and taking into consideration I am working with more than one dog at a time this whole training phase takes me about 2yrs to get the dog where I want them.
Dogs don’t care what you expect. I expect 100% first time compliance. I get 95%. But on the second issuing of the command (after being told NO) I usually get compliance. This is an attention issue not so much a training issue.
